What Causes Dry Eye?

With approximate 10 million cases of dry eyes in the country, dry eye is a common condition of the eye for which the top eye hospital in India is visited regularly. Also described as keratitis sicca (dryness and inflammation of the cornea), keratoconjunctivitis sicca (both cornea and conjunctiva suffer from dryness and inflammation), and dysfunctional tear syndrome (poor quality and/ or quantity of tears), dry eyes are manifested with irritation in the portions of eyes which often results into inflammation and scarring of the related area. In some cases, a foreign body sensation is also observed by the patient which is characterized by a feeling of something in the eyes which should not naturally belong there. As per the doctors of the widely consulted dry eye surgery hospitals in India, fatigue and heaviness are felt in the eyes, light sensitivity and blurred vision can be the potential symptoms as well of dry eyes.

The adequate quality and quantity of tears is an essential requirement so that the eyes can normally perform its functions. The composition of the tear is namely, a lipid element, an aqueous element, and a mucin element. All of these elements are manufactured by meibomian, lacrimal, and goblet cells of the conjunctiva, respectively which has specific roles to perform to aid keeping the eyes healthy. Any disarray in the normal production of tears can be a possible cause of dry eyes. The ophthalmologists from a top eye hospital in India state that people with some skin disorders have the condition of blepharitis which is often accompanied with blocked meibomian glands. Any kind of blockage or interference with the normal procedure of working of the tear glands can lead to the condition of the dry eye.

Another common cause of dry eyes is the decrease in the amount of tear production, it can be enhanced by natural conditions such as for ageing or by tear glands damage. Medical conditions such as diabetes, vitamin A deficiency, and thyroid disorders are known to develop decreased tear production. The intake of medications can also regulate a decrease in the tear production, specifically, antidepressants, antihistamines, hormones replacement therapy's medications, and drugs prescribed for hypertension are often responsible for decreased tear production.

Meibomian gland dysfunction or in characteristics term, the excessive tear evaporation is a major cause of dry eyes which is commonly incremented with the contact of air pollutants. The reports of dry eyes treatment in India put an alarming sign over the youth of this country because an extensive use of smartphones and computers is a major factor which happens to improve increased tear evaporation. Unlike the underlying reason of meibomian gland dysfunction, increased tear evaporation can also be caused by ectropion and entropion. In the former condition, the eyelids are turning towards the outward direction whereas, in entropion, the direction of turning of eyelids is towards the inward direction.

The treatment of dry eyes is usually performed through a prescription of over-the-counter medications and eye drops, it is primarily done to treat the reason due to which dry eye has become a prominent medical condition. The dry eye treatment cost in India can vary depending upon the type of treatment which is recommended as per the underlying cause of dry eyes, the severity of the condition, the condition (and structure) of the eyes, and general well-being of the patient. Eye surgery is recommended when the dry eyes are causing blurred vision or if it is important to open or close the tear ducts as per the patient's condition.
